Why create a chapter?
What makes Bags to Beds different from every other small group of volunteers who makes mats for only one winter is that we aim to make long-term, sustained change in our communities. In Salt Lake City, our first city, we became a known entity to resource providers, medical professionals, and individuals in the homeless community in less than one year. We connected with resource centers, halfway houses, rehabilitation centers, and more to make sure that we knew the needs of the community, and that we work working with experts on how best to help.
By creating a chapter in your city or town, you allow the mission of Bags to Beds to create long-lasting change there too. Wether you are passionate about getting bags out of streams or oceans, engaging community members in dialogue about waste or humanity, or potentially saving lives during cold winters, this is the perfect way to do that. A chapter will continue to be connected to our leadership, and have access to the resources, experience, and knowledge they have gained.
In Salt Lake, we have distributed over 100 beds, hosted over 50 service events, and saved at least 40,000 plastic bags from entering the waste stream. What will you do in your city?
